While Vidya Balan has amazed the nation with her unexpected display of sensual appeal as the sexy bombshell from the south, Silk Smitha, it is Bappi Lahiri who is clearly excited about The Dirty Picture. Reason being, the significant placement of Bappida’s song in the very first trailer of the film, which has already created a huge sensation worldwide.
The song “Ohh laa la…”, which can be heard playing in the background of the very first trailer of The Dirty Picture released a little over a week ago on You Tube, has been sung by none other than Bappi Lahiri himself. Although they could have had any singer do the song, director Milan Luthria and composer Vishal were adamant that they have Bappida sing the song. They stood their ground saying that, for a film based on the 80’s, not having Bappida do a song is like doing injustice to the music of that time. Bappi Lahiri on his part has been elated with the offer and seems to be ever grateful to the two for thinking of him.
For Bappi, this would be his second song for Milan Luthria, for whom he had first sung “Mumbai Nagariya”, in the John Abraham And Nana Patekar starred Taxi No. 9211.
Milan acknowledges the fact saying, “Yes, we have worked together before and continued this relationship with The Dirty Picture. Although there had been no initial plans to do so, Vishal-Shekhar and I decided at the very last minute that we should have Bappida sing “Ohh laa la” for the film. The setting of this song is in the typical south style where matkas and other colourful props were used in the background during dance numbers where the hero tried to woo his ladylove. Just like it was seen in films like Tohfa, Himmatwala, Maqsad etc.” He added, “We were fascinated to see Bappida at the studio and record the song with such fervour.”
The great part of it all was when Naseeruddin Shah and Vidya Balan got ready to dance to the song. Naseer was delightfully amazed that he was to lip sync to Bappi’s song, as he was making a comeback as a “dancing star”, especially after two decades since his “Oye-Oye” dance number in Tridev.
Chuckles Milan, “Naseer and I share a joke where he constantly queries whether I or anyone else on the sets had ever anticipated that he would be dancing to a song like “Ohh laa la” and moreover in Bappi’s voice with a typical Ramoji Rao studio set up added to it all.” “And with Vidya to accompany him in the song, he is totally ecstatic. My desire now is to have the three together on the same platform. I think I should be able to do that at the music launch of the film in October,” said the excited director.
Let’s see now, the threesome would certainly not make a dirty picture!
