Silk Smitha

The making of “Dirty Picture” has once again revived memories of the sex siren Silk Smitha who had ruled our hearts in the 1980’s with her sensuous gyrations that set fire to the screens during the era.

If one may recollect, Silk Smitha was the dusky damsel from South Indian cinema who created waves with her sexy item songs not only down south, but also in Bollywood during the 80’s. Her first step into Bollywood in 1982 landed her with nine releases that very year and thirteen releases the following year.

Although there was not much difference in the roles she played, no one seemed to mind the fact, as they were simply dazzled by the large-eyed voluptuous danseuse, who rocked the scenes she appeared in. The theatres would resound with hoots and whistles, the moment Silk Smitha appeared on the screen.

By the age of 23, this sex siren had already signed 30 movies and there wasn’t a star, from Sivaji Ganesan to Rajnikant to Kamalhasan and Chiranjeevi, who wished to have a film released without Silk having a raunchy number on it. In fact, it was considered that she was the star attraction of the movie she featured in and people came only to see her.

Born in 1960, in Eluru, Andhra Pradesh, Silk Smitha studied only up to standard four, but she had great aspirations of making a career for herself in the film industry in the south. This ambition led her to the tinsel town of the South, Kodambakkam where she began her career as a make-up artist.

However, she was not destined to remain a make-up girl forever because actor, director Vinu Chakravarthy discovered the beauty and later gave her the name “Silk Smitha”, by which name she gained fame in a matter of few years. The oomph that she oozed on screen was unbeatable and there was no stopping her.

Having done hundreds of roles as a seductress, Silk decided that she wanted to do some serious films as well, so that her acting talents would be better noticed than just her sensuous dance numbers. So, she signed up for the film Moondaram Pirai, which was remade in Hindi (Sadma) with Sridevi playing her role.

The film turned out to be a great hit and now directors were looking up to her not only as a sex siren who could set fire to the screens, but also as an actress who had great acting skills. Success seemed to be coming to her in big heaps.

Smitha Silk had done more than 450 films in a short span of 17 years, but popularity could not have lasted forever. With the next generation of stars taking over, her fame began to diminish. She decided to take up film production, but this did not work in her favour either, as all her ventures turned out to be disasters.

A year later, Silk Smitha was found dead in her Chennai apartment in mysterious circumstances. It was later revealed that unable to cope with the sudden downfall in her career and the depression that had set in, Smitha had decided to commit suicide.

The making of “Dirty Picture”, which is dedicated to Silk Smitha and is to be released on her birthday on December 2, will revive her memories in our minds once again. Directed by Milan Luthria, this film will have Vidya Balan portray Silk Smitha and as the posters reveal, she is certainly doing justice to the role.

The director however, is a little concerned about the portrayal, as he cannot decide whether he should take up the view of the masses about Silk or simply adopt an unprejudiced stand. As for us, we are looking to watch the movie with baited breath!
